What is the Media saying about Studio MAPPA?
What is the industry and media saying about about MAPPA's animator mistreatment?
The anime industry has been well known to have harsh working conditions. However, few studios have been publicly criticized as MAPPA has the recent years. MAPPA, the studio behind major hits like Attack On Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man, rapidly expanded; it was at the unfortunate expense of its animators. Many reports of overwork, hospitalizations due to stress, and an unrealistic production schedule have led to a wave of criticism from all kinds of media.
Although, what are these bloggers, reporters, editorialists, and online fans saying about MAPPA's mistreatment of employees? More importantly, what is the industry saying about this?
Konshuu: The Unreasonable Workload at MAPPA
A report from Konshuu highlights one of the focal issues with MAPPA's production model: the sheer number of influential projects that the studio takes on. Due to the studio's expansion and acceptance, these multiple large-scale productions have put major strain and pressure on its animators. While other studios stagger their work or outsource more, MAPPA seems very reliant on its in-house animators, pushing them to their absolute limits, mentally and physically.
The following is a very popular scene from Attack On Titan, which demonstrates the quality of work MAPPA animators are made to achieve. A single scene can take 6-8 weeks, which can be very stressful if the scene has to be of top of the line quality.
In relation to stress, a key issue that has been raised in the animation industry is the lack of job security, and animators often have no alternatives. The Konshuu report notes that "stable jobs aren't exactly easy" to find in animation, suggesting that even under extreme conditions workers are left with no choice but to endure the stress.
My Take:
I believe that this analysis is very spot on. MAPPA's rapid expansion may be impressive on the business side of things but is completely unrealistic for the animators that are forced to meet these impossible deadlines. Over time, I think if the workers are continually overworked without improving the situations, then the quality will be impacted. It will no longer be a positive reaction that MAPPA is animating your next favorite show, but rather an "oh- MAPPA is animating my show..."A very sad turnout for the studio if nothing changes.
The Torch: When Overwork Leads to Hospitalization
In December 2023, The Torch, a university student newspaper for Massachusetts Dartmouth, published a report detailing how much MAPPA's work environment had driven an animator to hospitalization. The article describes MAPPA's punishing schedule, with animators collapsing due to exhaustion and stress. Another highlight in this article is MAPPA's silence on the issue. Unlike other companies that attempt to damage control directly, MAPPA has ignored public concern, offering little reassurance that working conditions will improve.
My Take:
This is the most alarming piece of information about MAPPA that has been released to the public. It is one thing to hear "bad working conditions," but it is another thing to hear that animators are being hospitalized due to exhaustion, which is proof of a deeply broken system.
The Fan Community: Will Viewers Hold MAPPA Accountable?
Looking past journalism, fans and anime content creators have been actively discussing MAPPA's labor practices. On platforms like X and Reddit, the debate is intensifying. Many of the questions asked are along the lines of, should fans boycott MAPPA's works? Can anime productions be ethical when they're produced from exploitative labor?
Many argue that the industry is to blame; production committees, investors, and tight broadcast schedules create an environment where overwork cannot be avoided. While others believe that fans have a responsibility to push for better conditions for these employees and to demand transparency on the issue.
My Take:
In truth, the anime industry is complex on top of Japan's already controversial workforce practices. However, MAPPA is the center for the animation industry, as other studios are perfectly capable of producing fantastic works without overworking their employees. That being said, ignoring the problem is not the solution MAPPA should go with. On a different note, there are many videos that make jokes about the scenario.
Sources: While these YouTube Shorts may be funny, they tell the truth about some realistic scenarios that are most likely someone's life right now. For example, "We can finally go home to see our wife and kids." While it may be funny, it provides an uneasy feeling, as this could be a true case for a family.

I liked the examples you used here, and I agree with most of your takes as well. Finding out that a single scene can take 6-8 weeks of non-stop work from the animation crew really puts into perspective how long this art form takes to be created. My question for you is, do you think if overseas audiences boycotted Mappa studios, would Mappa get the message, or would they chalk it up to people not understanding the work culture in Japan?
ReplyDeleteStudio MAPPA's success with hits like Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man, are very impressive, but the reports of overwork, hospitalizations, and unrealistic deadlines are deeply troubling. While MAPPA's ambition to create content for its viewers is a good thing, it should not come at the expense of its animators. Reports have come out saying that unsustainable workloads have been placed on staff as well as hospitalizations due to exhaustion. Fans have also voiced there concern, emphasizing the importance of accountability and ethical practices in anime production.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the comprehensive overview of media perspectives on MAPPA's working conditions. Summarizing various reports provides a clearer understanding of the broader conversation surrounding the studio's practices.
