MAPPA's Response to their Ethical Concerns

MAPPA's Response to Ethical Controversy

To keep things short, the management at MAPPA has said one thing that was like dousing gasoline into a fire. The CEO of MAPPA at the time, Manabu Otsuka, stated that "they desire to continue rolling out high-quality anime in as short amount of time as possible". This only confirms that the employees at MAPPA are horrendously overworked. Other than this, no other major party at MAPPA has come out to make a statement about their actions at MAPPA. From the looks of it, MAPPA is almost choosing to ignore it or completely dismiss it.

In a report from Gamerant, highlights how Otsuka failed to offer concrete solutions; rather, he made statements that were vague or did little to address the core issue. Similarly, another report by Sportskeeda revealed very distressing stories from employees that describe a work environment that was so severe that animators were "literally dying" from the stress. Many of these tails have led to MAPPA being publicly humiliated.

Lack of Industry Regulation

Beyond MAPPA, these issues remain industry-wide within anime. The entirety of this suffers from the relaxed labor protections and a culture that places heavy priority on deadlines over worker well-being. However, MAPPA's rapid growth and its reliance on its overworked and underpaid employees have made it a focal point in industry-wide reforms.
MAPPA's approach to the matter has been more reactive than proactive. The company has made no efforts to correct these working conditions. Furthermore, MAPPA has done very little to openly acknowledge the allegations that are being placed against them. Due to the lack of transparency on the issue, there has only been more fuel to the flame on criticism. Though fans demand a systemic change from MAPPA, it is unlikely to change.

This image depicts one of the key animators from MAPPA. From the image we can tell that employees are not getting enough rest and are extremely deprived of getting normal amounts of sleep.

Evaluating MAPPA's Approach

MAPPA's handling of the situation is far from perfect. It appears MAPPA is trying to weather the storm without making up for their actions. By their lack of acknowledgement and solutions to their problem in depth, it puts the studio at risk of disconnecting from their workforce and audience. Fans that once supported and loved MAPPA's works are now questioning supporting the studio for their exploitative labor practices.
Ultimately, the studio's refusal to take action may have long-term consequences, not only for their reputation but also for the future of the quality of their works. If no change occurs from extra pressure internally or externally, there is no true say on how fair treatment will be given to these employees.

  1. The CEO's response to the controversy has been particularly heartbreaking. Straight up ignoring the concerns for the safety and help of the artists is not an appropriate way to respond to public criticism and controversy. Since the plight of the workers was ignored, I feel like its only a matter of time before there are massive strikes against Mappa. What do you think they could have done to better approach this controversy on a widespread, public scale.

  2. MAPPAs dismissive response to ethical concerns is quite alarming. The CEO’s statement on the matter also create a negative public perception, reinforcing the idea that MAPPA prioritizes production speed over worker well-being. You also highlight how MAPPA’s problems are part of a larger systemic failure within the animation industry. Are there any other studios that are currently trying to change the work culture or do they all have similar stances on the matter?
