Background Information on Studio MAPPA
Meet Studio MAPPA
Founded in June 2011 by a veteran animator, Masao Maruyama, which he did at the age of 70. The name MAPPA is actually an acronym for Masao Animation Produce Project Association. Prior to Maruyama founding MAPPA, he had already spent four decades already enjoying this career in animation. Before MAPPA, Maruyama co-founded the legendary animation studio Madhouse. Maruyama had worked with Studio Madhouse from the early 1970s right up to his splitting off and founding Studio MAPPA.
Today Studio MAPPA has six core departments. MAPPA is broken up into production, directors, rights management, CGI, 2D animators, and production development. Each department has a crucial role in developing the studio's best work.
Production Department
Production department takes care of materials, schedule budget, and quality control. In order to bring production to completion, this department will go from department to department to develop a wide range of knowledge. This department usually holds a lot of new hires so they can learn the ropes at the studio.
Directors
Directors at MAPPA are the ones in charge of monitoring the direction of a creative work, which includes storyboards. In order to achieve this role, employees must start as episode directors and then get promoted to a general director .
Rights Management
Those that are responsible for rights management will find themselves tasked with illustrations, merchandising, and advertisement of their titles. On top of this, rights management schedules events with the original goods to enrich the chance to enjoy the productions.
CGI Department
This department is made up of numerous parts, which include 3DCG, art, coloring, cinematography, editing, and design. The power of Studio MAPPA lies here. During in-house production, in which the goal image is shared with one another. This way along the path to completion, no mistakes are left in.
2D Animators
The team of 2D animators handle both conventional drawing by hand as well as digital. Contrary to the current mainstream way of hiring freelance 2D animators, MAPPA actively adopts their own employee system. MAPPA shocks most other studios by doing this because outsourcing can be more economical than maintaining a large in-house animation team.
Production Development
This specialized team handles tasks prior to production and constructs business plans with their domestic and international partners. Production development will also occasionally search for or involve overseas creators to enhance the creativeness of their titles. One of these notable animators is Benjamin Faure, who is from France.
Studios
In order to support the 408 employees that MAPPA has, they have three key studio locations. The primary office in Tokyo is the primary studio and contains each of the six departments. After the Tokyo studio is the Sendai studio, which houses a lot of employees responsible for in-between animation and digital painting. In the future MAPPA has plans to expand this studio to include CGI, 3DCG sections, compositing, and backgrounds. However, these plans will wait, as MAPPA has explained they will expand their studios as the anime market grows. Lastly, MAPPA's final studio opened fairly recently in 2023. This last studio is located in Osaka, which is Japan's third largest city. Most of the artists that work in this studio are in the CGI department and primarily staffed by the 3DCG artists. Most of the new hires for these studios live locally. MAPPA does this to make sure their employees can commute to work fairly quickly and don't have to worry about transportation.
The following video will display the process that MAPPA goes through to produce their shows.
All of this is what MAPPA finds important to reach their mission statement of "Delivering anime that will always remain in the hearts of viewers." Now the way that they achieve this has been questionable.

Mappa is one of my favorite animation studios honestly, I really liked the work they did on Chainsaw Man and I'm planning to go see the second arc movie for this series when it comes out this year in September. This post gave good insight into the different branches and divisions that actually make up Mappa, and it was cool to get sort of an inside look at their process. The section on 2D animators made me think, are there any ethical dilemmas that could come about from outsourcing their work to the extent they do as opposed to doing everything in house?
